In all the games of Monopoly I’ve ever played, I don’t think it was ever played until the end. Once it was clear one person had the advantage, the person with the least money and properties would quit, then it would chain react up the line in no time. When we were kids, one of my friends had no hesitation picking up the board and hurling it across the room, then kicking all the money and cards all over the place. I think those were the funnest games.
Everyone knows that Monopoly is just a fairly accurate parody of real-world capitalism, right? Them what has, gets; everyone else ends up horribly in debt and either goes bankrupt or dies. Or both. The main difference is the prolonged agony of the real world instead of the quick and painless exit in Monopoly.
The last time I played Monopoly we started with 6 players. (I kid you not) eight hours later it was down to me and one other equally-matched player, simply trading vast fortunes every move we made. After an hour of basically trading our entire stockpile of cash back and forth, hoping the other would make some error, we both agreed to just call it a tie and closed the game.
I’ve never played since. It’s like tic-tac-toe: you get players who know the game, and no one ever actually wins unless someone makes a mistake. I’d rather see how many jewels I can match on impossible-to-beat screens. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
The only time I ever won at Monopoly it was against three guys from Princeton, one of whom was an economics major. I was 10, I think. It wasn’t any superior knowledge or strategy on my part; it was all about who landed on the prime properties first, then adding houses and hotels. Dumb luck. Maybe that’s high finance in a nutshell—a disheartening thought.
My brother would insist that we take notes at the end of the night and start again the next day. I got extremely good at losing. My older sister would just keep playing.
