It seems they don’t know the solution is always at hand. Also, corn is good with just a sprinkle of salt. If you want to make it great add chili powder and cayenne pepper.
The corn in corn mazes is NOT edible for humans. They are made out of field corn. Field corn is hard and not sweet. For humans to eat field corn, it must go through a mill and be converted to food products and ingredients like corn syrup, corn flakes, yellow corn chips, corn starch or corn flour. The majority of field corn is used as animal feed and to make biofuel.
The sweet corn that people eat is only a small percentage of the corn grown. Farmers don’t make mazes out of sweet corn because they know people will take some.
Corn right off of the stalk isn’t bad at all. I used to grow corn in the back yard when I was a kid. Once in a while I’d pluck an ear off the stalk, peel off the husk, and munch away. Good stuff!

Also, I don’t think I’ve seen Marigold show that much compassion for Phoebe.

When the walls are edible, you aren’t ever really trapped.

Marigold: “Don’t worry about not having something to eat. We won’t starve to death”
Phoebe: “Whew! That’s a relief.”
Marigold: “Yeah………………..We’ll die of thirst first.”

Oh no, what will Phoebe do if there is no butter to cover the corn?, that’s unthinkable.

Eek! How will they ever escape the completely impenetrable walls of corn stalks?

To be fair I think a human would have a very difficult time eating uncooked corn.

I’ve eaten fresh of the stalk corn with no butter and cooked corn with no butter. If it’s good sweet corn it doesn’t really need butter

If it’s the right type just start a fire and pop your way out…

Butterless corn is like … mm… cheeseless apple pie! (technically edible, but why bother?)

No butter? I’ll starve, thanks.

Raw corn wouldn’t be exactly a pleasant food source.
