    These days, not signing your check will not save you any money. Most banks are running on such a small staff that your check probably is never examined by a human so the missing signature is not seen and the check is processed.

    And in England, a “cheque” is a bank document, while a “check” is when you look in on somebody, or in Canada when you knock someone down playing hockey.

    When I used to get checks back, in pioneer days, I noticed the ones I didn’t sign. Now I can’t tell.

    During the cold war, a Czechoslovakian escapes from behind the iron curtain by stowing away on a ship bound for England. He then walks into the first business that he comes across - a bank - and asks, in his broken English,

    ”Do you catché Czechs here?”
