Sally runs and shouts, "School! School! School!"<BR><BR> Sally kneels by the collapsed school and asks, "Why did you do it?!! Why did you do it?!!"<BR><BR> Sally walks away and says, "Our poor school . . . Why do such things like this have to happen? Such a beautiful school . . . Now just a pile of rubble!"<BR><BR> The collapsed school thinks, "Love me, love my rubble!"<BR><BR>

I remember reading this sequence as a kid in one of those Peanuts Parade collections. (I think it was “Don’t Hassle Me With Your Sighs, Chuck.”) But re-reading it as an adult with some idea of mental health and how it works, it chills me to the bone…because this is a textbook example of suicidal depression, and Schulz struggled with depression himself all his life. Was he ever tempted to end his own life? If so, maybe writing this sequence was a form of therapy.
