Cigar butts will provide you with the nicotine you need to keep you going for the rest of the day.

I should think that swiss cheese and ketchup would even gross Calvin out.

back in my much younger days, the school lunches were often Pork (or pork products). Being Jewish, I couldn’t eat that, and “carry” lunches were awful to be charitable. “We” talked the school board into providing alternate choices, rather like the Catholic kids got “meatless” choices on Friday.

Same cheese-loaded tomato soup (rather like melted red crayons – looked like ’em, and similar taste). Cheese sandwiches tasted like lard, and probably were…. Mid-week, and likely to make you too sick to attend the rest of the week.

Not bad stuff for folks from the Aadams Family. Otherwise AARGH…. Told mom to keep her mouth shut – they’d find something worse.

I remember my first encounter with beanie-wienies. They were the best thing I ever had. Excepting Krystal burgers, of course (White Castles to those in the Northern climes)

This is one of the few times Calvin gets the better of Susie. Normally, she has a good comeback except for the occasions when she “decks him.”

School cafeteria food is great. It saves on buying glue and in an emergency the bread can be fashioned to make a report cover.

We had a rating system 1 – 3: If you tipped the plate vertical and it stayed, it was a 3. If you turned the plated upside down and it stayed, it was a 2. If you threw the plate one the ground it broke and the BW held the plate together, it was a 1 !!!!

I had cafeteria food for a few weeks in elementary school, until my mom found out there were days when I ate only ketchup because the rest was unappetizing.

I lived next door to a large, rather poor, family whose mother never cooked. I remember going over there and the kids would be making ketchup and mayo sandwiches on white bread while mom and dad snuck off to McDonald’s. The thought still gags me to this day.

It’s cheap, and parents don’t have to prepare sack lunches the night before. Also, it makes the kid appreciate what they get at home.

This has been one of my all time favorites. The cartoon, not the meal. :-) Although cigar butts in gallstone sauce isn’t too bad. I have it occasionally.

I’ve often wondered if such creative (and hilarious) characterizations of Calvin’s food just pops into Watterson’s head, or does he really have to struggle to find just the right words.

I may have to try the swiss cheese and ketchup sandwich. I remember, as a kid, trying the milk & Pepsi Laverne from Laverne and Shirley used to drink. Wasn’t great, but it wasn’t horrible.

In K-8, I ate cafeteria food 2 days a week and lunchboxed three. In 9-12, I brown bagged 9 and 10, and cafeteria food 10-12. We had two to choose from, “Traditional” and “Fast Food.” I had the “Fast Food” one. US $1.98 got you the burger, chips, Coke (not Pepsi) and a banana.

    Of course this was the 1980s. . . . .

We was blessed with 3 excellent cooks in the grade school I attended. This was back when you could get an extra carton of milk for 2 cents. I volunteered to work in the kitchen where I would help wash all the silverware and food trays and wipe all the tables down. I got to eat all the food I wanted, it seemed to make the cooks happy that I enjoyed there cooking so much. My mother spent a lot of time in the hospital and more often than not this was my only meal for the day. Probably why I didn’t end up obese.
