All PC is people and or groups wanting attention and having it go with their beliefs and screw everyone’s else’s! The sad part is most cave to the pressure, like sports teams giving up their decades long LOGOS because it may hurt someone’s feelings! WHAT A BUNCH OF CRAP! This generation is a bunch of cry babies if things don’t go THEIR WAY, OR HOW THEY BELIEVE.
Too sad and too true to offer a “love” to this one. I recall when the ‘Political Correctness’ movement began; it was an attempt to educate people so that they could avoid giving unintentional offense; isn’t it a horrible commentary on our times that “PC” is now used almost as a curse word to condemn such efforts and to offer up INTENTIONAL offense?
Do people really think the world and how people interact has changed significantly in centuries of civilization? The only identifiable difference is the rise in connectivity. Put the internet in ancient Rome and I think you would find the same interactions occur, in Latin at least.
For me, civility is still alive and well. Encounters with friends, family, neighbors, colleagues and miscellaneous strangers tend to be at least neutral in tone but more often positive.
2019? Sure seems like it died when everyone, including my mother, started dropping F and S bombs with every exhalation. That’s been going on for quite a while.
My hubby & I are always careful to use manners with each other (second nature with us) because if aren’t polite to your mate, then to whom else would you be polite? It’s nonsensical to be nice to strangers but not family. Unless I’m in a lot of pain, I smile at everyone from my wheelchair and anyone who helps us gets our warmest thanks. Manners matter. (18th anniversary in 3 mos.)
Wow! What a very interesting mixture of well thought out ideas and contrasting point-of-views! Thank you all for contributing to such a valuable exchange of ideas! Whether everyone agrees with one another or not, I feel it is safe to say we all definitely succeeded in having a civil discourse! Well done, everyone! I learned a lot from all of you! I hope you all feel the same way! I, personally, love hearing all different point of views, whether I agree or not, I am always open to listening to everyone. I have always enjoyed learning from others. It’s a real treat! Too bad more people, especially nowadays, don’t seem to feel the same way – they’re missing out on a lot of information that can challenge their thinking, or help strengthen their stance on issues or even alter their position altogether, while sharpening their mind and creating a space for more future exchanges to occur – which is great for civilizations as a whole. :)
Depends on your definition of civility, and who’s asking for it and why. Manners, politeness in public? Certainly. Not calling people out on their unpopular (to say the least) opinions and actions? A call for civility starts to look rather self-serving.
