It’s amazing how many have held onto these superstitions. When I got Sooty the cat from the rescue centre she had been there a long time. Apparently people wouldn’t have an all black cat. Luck me because I bought her and a more affectionate cat I’ve never known. She certainly never brought me any irrational superstitious troubles.
Contrary to popular belief, cats do NOT suck the breath from babies. They are interested in the REMNANTS of the baby’s last meal. They like the smell and try to lick it. They would do the same to adults. Also cats and dogs do NOT get jealous of the baby and hate it. That is pure hogwash. Families get rid of dogs and cats when a baby comes because they do not want to take the time to include the animal. The animal becomes ignored and bored and does things to get attention. Taking away the only home a dog has ever know just because you are lazy is never justified. BTW, pit-bulls are NOT dangerous. They are born lovable and kind. They have to be TAUGHT to be viscious…by vicious owners. As Cesar Milan says “The are no bad dogs, only bad owners”.
I understand in Japan black cats are considered lucky and highly sought after; my black stray was named “Princess Zouzou” after a Josephine Baker film character. :^D
My son got an all black kitten, named him Binks after the black cat from the movie Hocus Pocus. He is grown now, my wife calls him Lucifer. He is basically my wife’s cat now.

The “and” symbol & is called an ampersand. (When did the Salemites start accusing cats to be witches?)

I assume all types of animals in Salem were thought to be familiars.

Yeah, they went quite mad back then. It’s still around in a slightly different iteration, but the same madness.

Thank good for cats! Without them we would be over run by mice, rats, etc.

But, unfortunately, cats are also decimating the song bird population.
KHMO radio (Hannibal, Mo.) once had a black cat contest – with several cat-a-gories such as the blackest, ugliest, etc
