I would also like to point out that poor Shirley is completely innocent here. She was just hangin’ in her flat when Alice came looking for her. She was merely acknowledging that Alice had just called her name, signaling that she (Shirl) was ready for the next declaration.
I’m wondering if those jars are store bought or home canned by Grandma. My own Mom used to do a substantial amount of canning in the fall for vegetable products that had become somewhat scarce in local markets.
There once was a girl dressed quite frilly, And humming a familiar line of rockabilly. A handsome boy came beside her, Said he’d make a good provider, If she married him and she made piccalilli!! There- not that easy to use it in a limerick
“Cranberry surprise”? With that list of ingredients (which, be it noted, does not include cranberries)?Like My Hero, Petey, I think I’d rather chew on my arm!
Meanwhile, Alice wanders off in search of what she does not want to find (can you say paradox?), Big Shirley. And, lo, she finds perfectly innocent and friendly Big Shirley!

I can hardly imagine the taste of the grandmother’s cranberry surprise when it comes to German pickled cabbage therein. (What’s piccalillli?)

The surprise is when you actually find a cranberry in it.

Not sure who looks more worried, Alice or Big Shirley…..

What grandma does to cranberries no longer surprises the Otterloops. Fills them with dread, perhaps. I wonder what Petey thinks of it.

They served it at the diner in Mayberry. Barney Fife was a big fan of it.
