I remembered reading an article in National Geographic long ago about the ghost ships of the War of 1812. A little googling shows I was not mistaken, as such an article did come out in the March 1983 issue, just two months before this series of strips was published. I imagine Schulz might have read the same article back then and was thus inspired to make this series of strips.
