Coach Nordling: I don't like these early morning games, some players show up late, some show up half-awake. We need everyone on top of their game to handle the teams we're playing this season, and our defense needs to play 110%. Mrs. Nordling: Settle down, Chester. It's only a game. Nordling child: Dad, how can you see in this fog? Coach Nordling: I'm thinking about changing to a different forma- Mrs. Nordling: Chester! Referee: Goalkeeper? George: Chester! Where are you? They're kicking off and I'm not sure I've got the lineup you wanted on the field! The team we're playing is strong on the right so I've moved Mondo-Chester, where are you? Coach Nordling: We had a wreck. We're at the hospital. We aren't going to make it. George: Omigosh! All three of you? Coach Nordling: I mean to the match! We won't be making it to the match! We're all fine - just some bruises. I want you to keep something in mind out there today, coach. George: Sure coach - I'm listening. Coach Nordling: Enjoy yourselves, it's only a game. George: It's soccer, Chester. Coach Nordling: Okay-okay-it's only a match. Geez-

Hmm, I bet Mondo and his team wins. Chester is kind of like Charlie Brown as a manager, not too many wins so the few wins his team gets are usually when he is not able to be on the pitch. I think this also happened a couple of seasons back.

Sports is a distraction for me, to take time off from real problems.

I ran into a deer in an urban neighborhood north of Chicago. It was a stag. It just looked at me and walked away. Totaled my car…

What is George gonna tell the boys when they find out that one of their teammates is in the hospital?

We had both situation early morning matches we found called for donuts for the kids. Nothing like a sugar rush to wake them up. We also had a two players on the team get in a car crash on the way to the game. One was our All State sweeper. We lost the match not because of the players we were missing, but because everyone was so distracted no knowing how bad the injuries were. It turns out just minor bumps and bruises.

America — maybe the world — takes sports too seriously.
