Because back when it was first played in 1903, it really WAS the two best teams in the world—but only because baseball hadn’t spread much beyond the United States at that point. (There’s also some theories that say it was sponsored by the New York World newspaper—yes, naming rights existed over a century ago—but I think that’s been debunked.)
