“If I wanted to associate with people from different races and backgrounds, I would have gone to a foreign school; where I would have hung out with people from my home country.”

Want to integrate people really fast? Start by trading food and recipes. Invite people to your table and into the kitchen.

It would seem we are doomed to repeat our human history over and over again. We obsess over finding ways to divide ourselves into tribes and then to denigrate other tribes to bolster our own tribe. We even seek to denigrate others during, and over, a multi-cultural holiday season that should be about peace and joy as celebrated by many cultures. I get separating church and state, but banning wreaths….!? We are all one race of humans with the common trait of fear of some perceived “other”.

This is more timely today than when it was first published in 1993.

My idea of coexisting is leave me alone and I’ll leave you alone. When we need to interact treat each other with courtesy and respect.

So this is where Gentrification seeded. The Boomers seemed so intent on making us equal and ‘the same’ and now we want to be individuals. To be able to associate with whomever we wish, and more importantly, not associate with whomever we wish.

I think a point is being missed here, nowhere is anyone in the comic strip (or real life) telling you that you must “adopt” these other cultures, they are saying that it’s well past time we started just ACCEPTING the differences, be interested in them, no one is saying you have to start wearing a turban because you talked to a Sikh, or wear a yarmulke because you attended a shabat, or a hajib because you talked to a woman wearing a headscarf. But maybe be interested in what these things mean to that person culturally. Learn, be educated and find out you are all not that different when it comes to everyday morals and ethics, or our beliefs in a higher being. What horrible thing will happen to you if you are white/black and sit next to and talk to a black/white? you might both learn something that will make you more TOLERANT,,, KEY WORD HERE, FOLKS, TOLERANT of one another. Thank you and God Bless.
