I’ve heard and experienced that smoking has diminished a lot in EU countries. The reason, according to what I read, is that the EU is forcing member countries to be more conscious of health care costs, and therefore disallowing smoking in many more public places than formally. I don’t know if this is actually true, but in my travels in the past few years it seems to be. And while visiting some eastern European non-EU countries recently it was pretty obvious that they have not yet been affected by the same restrictions.
Years ago a neighbor retired from Philip Morris. Part of his retirement pkg was s free carton of cigarettes every month for life. Good way to shorten his pension draw.

I recall a vacation in Japan…..heavy chain smoking was a way of life. In Hong Kong I turned on the hotel TV and was surprised at seeing cigarette ads
