Depending on the nutrients of the soil, some plants do not grow the way they are supposed to grow. My soil is naturally too high in nitrogen so plants tend to grow longer and thinner instead of bushier like they would in a normal amount of nitrogen. This means that when the description says 3 feet tall, I will get 4 to 5 feet tall and I have to trim them back to get them to get bushy. (I currently have a 6 foot tall bush in my backyard that said 3 feet on the plastic piece that was attached to the bush when I bought it.)
My pet peeve is people who use hedge trimmers to make shrubs into spheres and cubes. It destroys plant health and drastically increases maintenance requirements vs more naturalistic pruning. It’s even worse when they do it to plants that are not shrubs. My employer’s landscaper lops the top and sides off the Russian Sage, eliminating most of the blooms.

They do grow “the way they’re supposed to look”.
By definition.
