I think John had reached the stage in his life where he was looking forward for his children to grow up and leave home so he and Elly would have the freedom to do things together like they did before having children, then Elly fell pregnant again. He is despondent that he is circling back to raising another baby. Going backward rather than forward. It looks like Elly felt that way in the beginning but now she is really nesting so I’d say she is looking forward to raising a new baby.
Oh those salad days of being a kid and living in terror at the phone ringing for heinous crime that had been committed. As a kid when the entire universe revolved around me the idea that teacher etc. might think “oh man do I really want to get into this with his parents… I’ll call tomorrow.” And then of course two or three days later adult logic kicks in and the teacher thinks oh yeah I was supposed to call but I’ll look like an idiot calling this late. I’ll just let it go." Meanwhile of course in my mind I know that some serious level of planning is on the go and the reason the teacher hasn’t called yet is that the police are still looking at options.
If Elizabeth stinks at school, soon it will be this in the future…
Teacher: “OK Grade 5, we are going to talk about geography. For starters, what is the capitol of Alberta…Elizabeth Patterson?”
Elizabeth is now a fat, dumpy, middle aged woman, still in Grade 5
Elizabeth: “Look lady, I got an ovarian cyst, my husband got laid off at the steel mill, and I am now worried that my parent’s baby is having a baby. Will you cut me some slack and stop nagging me about a stupid place in Alberta?"
A little girl is sitting next to her who looks exactly like Elizabeth right now
Girl{whispering}: “Medicine Hat, Mom!”
Teacher: “I heard that, Elizabeth Patterson III. I want to see both of you after school!”

Looks like the parents now know Liz is not doing well in school. Wonder if Liz told them or did the school call?

Mike is… well…a teenager. That’s the problem? I loved having teenagers in my house. It was the pre-teen years that were difficult.

I believe this happens to all of us. Now and then we think someone else’s life is easier, better or more rewarding than our own.

It is good to remember that the ‘good old days’ were when we wished we were where we are now.
