I look outside the window to the 30 foot tall blue spruce that started out as a teeny tiny freebee Arbor Day seeding from some store almost 30 years ago. Where did the time go?
My uncle was a forester. Every year, he’d buy a live, potted “christmas” tree, usually a balsam fir for the livingroom. They’d decorate it for the season, then, in the new year, it would be wrapped and put in a sheltered spot outside. When it became warm enough, he would plant it near the previous year’s’ trees. When he finally sold the house, there was a tidy little forest behind his house.
My dad and grandfather had houses next to each other. They each had a 3/4 acre plot. Aside from the houses, they planted over 770 trees (yes, I counted). After a few years, you couldn’t see Grandad’s place from the road and when in his yard, it looked as if you were in a clearing in a forest. Most of the trees were conifers.

Sort of reminds me of the Sea Monkeys ads on the back of comic books when they were still 10¢

Planted some from spores and got two. Gave them to my father. They got about 15-20 feet high and lasted for years. It was interesting.

Hey, it’s alive after being shipped in a box. That’s pretty super-magical.

Reminds me of the Steven Wright joke
“I bought some batteries, but they weren’t included.”

It’s always that darn Small Print, if it’s not the Warning Labels found only inside the package!

I once had a bunch of redwood seeds sent to my niece and her family in Eugene, Oregon, with the suggestion that they turn whatever grows into bonsai.
