The exaggerated speech patterns and automatic assumptions of menial work are the most problematic things here. It’s fantasy – everything is caricature. Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t question. This wonderful art should be seen, faults and all. I don’t see a meanness here that accompanies deep racism. Let’s not throw the baby out with bathwater. What really matters is improving things right now.
It’s a bit wild the series started the day after the main bulk of the St Louis Olympics, although the Olympics/World’s Fair program sprawled out so long that the Oz folks still had plenty left to see.
