Doesn’t have to just be a yearly donation. Once a month is good.

Today’s strip is wonderful and with this world being so nasty at present we should all try and spread extra kindness.

I’ve never seen a dog as cute as Koko in any of the shelters I’ve been in and rarely are they a purebred, mostly mixed breeds that are still are very adoptable but take a special person to take them home into their families. I had a Schnauzer mix years ago that when I got him home hid most of the time behind furniture and only came out to eat, no telling what that dog had been through before. But I also had a mutt from a shelter who was so ugly that only a mother could love and turned out to be the most loyal dog anyone could ask from. Never saw my own shadow while he was around cause he was always in it. The shelter dogs, at least around here where I live, can sometimes be great finds but often will require a lot of “therapy” to adapt, so sad. The attendant at this shelter actually told me well we don’t get the pick of the litter, referring to what he had at the time. Some joke! I can’t imagine what some of their former owners ever did to these poor dogs. Hopefully there are better shelters around the country.

The 9 who came from shelters were there until we found them because they were missing a limb – hit by cars, abused, and one used for target practice. We became a pack. It took a couple of them awhile to fit into family life but the effort was worth every second. 4 have crossed over but right now our 5 continue to be the loves of our lives.

All of ours have been rescues/shelter dogs since 1973. Only one genuinely bad apple in the bunch; most of them have been extraordinary dogs. Getting from a shelter is a little riskier than from a rescue organization, but if take your time, patiently let them know what the rules are (dogs are actually big on structure) and MOSTLY let them know they’re SAFE, you can have a wonderful companion.

Get a shelter or rescue group dog or cat. Remember the older ones, the ones that aren’t “perfect”, the ones that have been overlooked, and the black dogs & cats.
