In the West Indies they soak fruitcakes in rum for 4 to 6 months before eating them.

OK, just for the record: IT IS NOT, REPEAT NOT!!!!, OK to blindside someone with “bring a covered dish” AFTER they’ve accepted the invitation. Someone who does that gets exactly what they deserve: last week’s creamed spinach-and-kale leftovers.
