in this morning’s news alone, we have a story about more geniuses who gave away 27 and 6 million yen, respectively, to online scammers. i’m not a greedy person – i could’ve put just a fraction of those amounts to much better use…

Before the Internet became common, my company received a snail mail letter, allegedly from an executive of the Nigerian oil monopoly, asking my help in transferring some ill-gotten money out of Nigeria, with a percentage payoff to me. I called the RCMP (“the Mounties”) Commercial Crimes section to report it:
“I got this letter from Nigeria.” “We advise you not to respond to it.”
“Would you like it for your files?” “No thanks, we have lots of them.”
“Perhaps you’d like to pass it on the Nigerian police?” “Nah, they’re probably in on it.”
