Stagecoach for me would be two The Quiet Man three, but The Searchers was classic in every way. You were never sure if when he found Natalie Wood he would save her or kill her.
Lots of people love “The Searchers” but my favorite is “Rio Bravo”. It’s the first one I bought when I got a VCR. I hacn’t seen it since high school so I watched it so many times I ruined teh tape and had to buy a new one now I have a DVD.
Pluggers still haven’t gotten around to watching the Westerns Clint Eastwood starred in, because they have never heard of that 89 year old whippersnapper! :)
Easy “Big Jake.” I don’t believe "The Quiet Man (a good movie) qualifies as a western. Besides “The Quiet Man” and “McLintock” promote spousal abuse. Maureen O’Hara was an underrated hottie and a lady who wouldn’t stand for any balderdash.
I think it is hard for anyone growing up in a culture where race is unimportant, to appreciate The Searchers. It is simply impossible to understand or relate to his motives.
There are so many JW westerns that I enjoy. I love McClintock for the humor, Rio Bravo for the characterizations of those 4 completely different actors (Wayne, Nelson, Martin & Brennan), and Cahill, US Marshall for the family relationships. I didn’t care for The Searchers, it’s a bit too dark for my taste.
I do love some of his war movies, though. They Were Expendable, Operation Pacific and Sands of Iwo Jima come to mind.

“Stagecoach”, his first western feature. “The Three Mesquiteers”, a Republic serial he did is also good for a laugh.

“She Wore A Yellow Ribbon”. His performance as Captain Nathan Brittles is nothing short of brilliant.
