My uncle had a nutcracker that consisted of a sliding weight and a rubber band. Not pretty, but it cracked nut shells without destroying the pecans.

Not very effective nut crackers if you might break them instead of the nut. Walk towards them with a Brazil nut or a black walnut just to see the look on her face.

So, can we still call it a nutcracker if it will not crack nuts?

Sadly a lot of the more recent holiday themed nutcrackers are display pieces, they aren’t tough enough to crack nuts.

I don’t like these “traditional” nutcrackers. They creep me out. But I have a very nice nutcracker and I just love. It’s like a pair of pliers except shaped like two squirrels; their tails are the handles. You put the nut in the squirrels’ arms and then squeeze the tails together. Beautiful piece of sculpture, feels good in my hand, and does the job.

Cracking my nuts never appealed to me (Hold funny remarks). Back in the day I preferred the pre-cracked canned variety. Not so much work or bother. Plus there’s that “picker” thingey to contend with. And “roasting chestnuts on open fire” was just an old-timey song.

Modern day nutcrackers have lost their purpose.

We had a great working one for nuts, but it didn’t do well on the Brazil nuts my mom needed for the fruitcake. To this day, I’m not a fan of those nuts. I do miss her fruitcake, though.

Mash two pecans together in one hand and you can usually crack one of them.

Kind of like Star Wars toys? (Can’t play with them, just look at them?) By the way: I once broke a nutcracker soldier trying to break open a tough nut. I think many of them are just decorative!

In at least one telling of “The Nutcracker,” Fritz uses Clara’s yet-lifeless nutcracker on a walnut, thereby breaking the jaw. He criticizes it for not doing its job.
