My brother once told me he felt shorted. His birthday was Dec. 16.

That “what you get for your birthday it will also be what you get for Christmas” rule finally ended with me this me this year (as well as my cousin). We now get separate gifts on separate events.

Our daughter-in-law and one of our granddaughters have birthdays very close to Christmas. We treat each special day separate and celebrate with them … it ensures that we get our fair share of cake.

My oldest brother was born on Christmas Eve, I was born on a Friday the 13th, don’t know which of us you would say has an unlucky birthday

My Mom and nephew were born 12/22, my daughter was born 12/24 and one of my brother’s was born 1/25. We always had separate gifts, wrapped in birthday paper and tried to have nice gifts for each event…because my Mom grew up with a relative that gave one gift, wrapped in Xmas paper, which was “for your birthday and Xmas, now”. Richest relative, stingiest gift giver.

My son, aunt and mother-in-law all have this issue. We cope by making a bigger deal of their birthdays than Christmas.

Well, I’m pleased to see my cartoon struck a chord with enough people. Today is my wife (and her twin sister’s) birthday. If you guys think you had stingy family using the proximity of your birthday and Christmas- imagine having someone handing you and your twin one gift that was for BOTH your birthdays and Christmas, all at once. I’m sure they felt they were being frugal.

I have a niece that was born on Christmas Eve. The named her Elise Noel. I thought her name should have been Elise Navidad.

Being a December baby myself, I got combination holiday/birthday gifts during my youth. Then one year my Dad felt guilty and gave a big box full of gifts to make for it.

In my teens I got a single earring for my birthday from my sister and was told I had to wait till Christmas for the other. So: Dec. 13, with grandkids born the 20th (on my mom’s 80th!) and 24th and twin nephews born the 18th and their twin niece and nephew who were due on their birthday but came too early to make December. Plus a cousin also born 12/20. December birthdays R Us.
