Retired programmer here. Oddly I worked on a green screen mini computer system for most of my career in spite of getting my formal training on pcs. I’ve also been a network admin and pc hardware person. The phenomenon described above is too real.
Spent over 40 years working with computers and much of that involved being the support guy (both formally and informally)…. so on the occasions when I had to call for help I would come prepared with data to help the troubleshooting process.
I don’t know why I bothered, the guy at the other end of the phone would insist on following his script, with all the inane steps that are typical of such things. You should have heard the indignation when I called them on script following instead of thinking thru the problem.
I eventually learned to not bother since it just slowed down the process of them figuring out they didn’t know what was wrong and bumping me to someone who could actually help.
