That concept is based on a several century old math mistake, which was to not “believe” in zero (or “nothing”): “Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea” by Charles Seife. If one wishes to beat themselves up and look deeper into the issues of believing in “nothing” read “Infinitesimal: How a Dangerous Mathematical Theory Shaped the Modern World” by Amir Alexander.
Newborns are not given the age of “one” at birth but an age based on their minutes, hours, days, weeks and months of life until their first birthday (and even then we mark their rapid change by months like 15, 18, 20, etc months).
How we mark the calendar year on a planet that is several billions years old is an arbitrary calculation based on the tenets of belief (which includes rejecting the concept of “nothing”). For some this is 5780. For others it is even yet another number other than 2019 going into 2020.
It all depends where you put the “origin.” Plus it is not important, so there is not reason to even care.

New decade party? Why not use both conventions? Sounds like a valid excuse for two parties instead of only one.

Whatever gave Kennedy more “fudge room” to land men on the moon… or whatever sells more product.

Decades start with “XXX0” and run to “XXX9”. Centuries start with “XX01” and run to “XX00”.

The third decade of the third millennium starts with 2021. The 20s start with 20.

When all the arguing is over, could someone explain why we should care? Just curious.

No matter when the decade starts, I still have to go back to school.

Shorter version of my comment:
He was being mathematically stupid.
