I don’t mind when you put your fingers in your ears and say, “La la la, I can’t hear you.” It’s when you put your fingers in my ears (or do the equivalent and drown someone out) and say, “La la la, you can’t hear them!” that I have a problem with it.
When I went to see Penn & Teller a few years ago, they were selling little metal tiles engraved with the Bill of Rights for $5 each. The idea was to carry them to the airport and when the agent took it because it set off the metal detector, one would loudly proclaim that they were “taking away my rights”.
Nicely symbolic for the discussion of “free speech” – is the Right of Free Speech true without including equality – when every whisper of a rich and powerful person is amplified to thunder over the outcry of the underpriviledged?
