I remember getting a home chemistry kit as a young lad. Things turned out badly when I was trying the various experiments and accidentally overheated some Sulphur resulting in huge clouds of foul smelling thick black smoke to fill the entire house.
Fortunately we managed to get all the windows open and had the exhaust fans running, but the house still smelled absolutely dreadful for days afterward, I was never allowed to use that chemistry kit again and it was promptly consigned to the rubbish bin.

In the day, a home chemistry kit would have worked. Maybe make your own soap?
