When my boy was little, people complimented me on how polite he was. How did I get him to say please and thank you? I replied that I said please and thank you to him when appropriate. I was surprised by how often people would say that they would never do that. Parents didn’t say please or thank you, children did as they were told or else. I think imitation is a more reliable system. I’m not certain I’d like to run into their children now, some forty years later.
When I went away to college to play football, the first thing the head coach taught us in the very first practice was how to shake hands. We practiced that for ten minutes. I’ll never forget it.
