The saddest thing about Poe is that, after his death, his worst enemy wrote a biography full of lies and malice to destroy his reputation. Those lies are what most people believe about him now. At least his fiction and poetry live on.
Oh, and he wasn’t mad. He obviously had depression, as well as a tragic, sad life, but he wasn’t crazy. Heck, he produced so much work in criticism, fiction, and poetry that he earned a living, no easy feat, then or now, and serious mental illness would have prevented that.
