Niven and Pournelle wrote a novel Oath of Fealty, released in 1981. It was partly about a giant arcology in California. The roof, plenty high enough to jump from to one’s death, had an impenetrable fence all the way around. Except one place where there was a gate. And on the other side of the gate was a diving board. And under the diving board, a sensor that popped a safety net out as soon as the suicide’s body dropped below the board.

Actually, wouldn’t it be the lovers without commitment issues who should stay right? The net saves them so they’ll have more time together.

Interesting. A net with solid walls.

Looks like that net is rarely used.

Apparently, avoiding commitment is a net gain.

Did they borrow that net from Foxconn?
