A leash is love if it protects the dog from running out in traffic or attacking another dog. it’s also no choice if leash laws apply.
But not 100% necessary in all cases. I trained my 5-year-old Blue Heeler to stay with me while riding my bike. He is on a "verbal " leash, so to speak.
He stops and goes on command and will not run after squirrels even if one darts in front of us on the side walk, and he LOVES to chase squirrels. He doesn’t show any interest in other dogs either when we are out on a run. Smartest dog I ever owned.
Not many dogs can do this. I’ve had a lot of dogs in my life of 6 decades, and he is only one of two that I owned that I could trust to do this. All others stay on the leash as is the necessity.
TIP: The best way to exercise a dog with a bike on-leash (once they are use to traveling with one) is to let them set the pace, so that they are right next to or right in front of you all of the time. If you find you are riding ahead of your dog, then SLOW DOWN… you are going too fast. Only they know how tired they are.

What will Will make of the flashing led collars/leashes you see now.

My sweet little girl is so stupid and excitable she is a danger to herself and others if she isn’t on a leash.

It’s only when they take me for a walk, silly!

We don’t need no stinkin’ leashes!

sure it is. In exchange for walking loose leash my dogs get shelter, food, games, toys, adventures, car rides, etc.

It’s a small price to pay for 2 square meals, a warm bed to sleep in and the devotion of your own person. Wish I could show you.

Will, it’s the leash they can do for you.

The leash is so that doggo knows where mom or dad is at all times.

Don’t forget, Will, what happens to dogs in a shelter who never get adopted. They can’t keep you forever.
