What were those thing he scratched off – dirt or fleas?

Squirrels revenge.

Just recently, some comic had the reverse of this — the dog shedding a flea onto a squirrel, or maybe onto a bird. Either way, it doesn’t seem to be Dogs of C-Kennel, but I wish I could remember what it was.
