I was wondering when one of them was going to notice their lack of color.
I think the gray is an invisibility spell (and insmellibility as the great big sniff failed to detect them)
The truth is color ink is expensive and grey is cheaper.
My guess is the grey made them look like stone so the dragon thought they were statues instead of a yummy meat snacks.
