As soon as I could look over the steering wheel and have my feet touch the pedals I could take the car up the alley and into the garage, but only if Mum wasn’t in the car. It was easier to drive the boat—no pedals to mess with, and lots of open space on the lake.
My daughter was 11 when she drove my 44tonner… complete with trailer… Well OK we never left the yard but she could reverse it up and park it better than most adult men…
That ice cream cone Spud’s envisioning keeps getting more and more elaborate…
I’m guessing Amelia didn’t realize just what she was getting herself into until AFTER she already hopped in, otherwise I’m sure she never would’ve in the first place.
Maybe the dad was driving initially and only switched over to Wallace part way while heading to pick up Spud…
Started out driving a Farmall tractor somewhere around 10,then a bobtail truck to pick up hay in the fields, then a standard transmission Chevy II, finally graduated to a 1972 Chevelle with auto, air and AM/FM. That is how you progressed in the country.

At first I thought Amelia was just teasing Spud, but that look on her face, she’s petrified.

It’s cool. My dad let me drive the tractor down to the mailbox when we lived on the ranch. I was 12… I survived.

Amelia really didn’t know the definition of abject terror until she moved to Snug Harbor.

Amelia’s cool with Wallace driving. She just doesn’t want to share the truck with the Spud.

Death or ice cream. I can see why Spud is torn.

Amelia should take advantage of the pause for jump off and run away. Maybe dragging Spud with her.

By the time Spud makes up his mind, the ice cream will have melted.
