And why exactly do we not want alternative energy sources, righties? Why should we be beholden to these creeps?

Motive, there is nothing in the constitution allowing government to develop alternative fuel.

churchill: we might have more alternatives had Reagan not killed the initiatives that Carter started – and we might have a thriving solar power industry with more advanced technology, too, instead of handing it to the Germans and Japanese. Yes, of course there are alternatives. First of all, we need to try and reduce our dependency on oil. We no longer have the vast quantities we did; we used it. The cost to even produce and refine oil has increased, enough that the “oil sands” of Canada are now hot property instead of being ignored. The ANWR reserves that the conservatives were so anxious to drill would last a mere six months at our current consumption rates. The greater our efficiency, the longer we can go on less. Obtaining supplemental power sources can help reduce dependencies as well. A decent electric car wouldn’t hurt either. As for the Mideast, we are reaping what we sowed. We supported every tinpot dictator who was anticommunist and supplied us with oil, and you better believe the folks over there know it. And you think the liberals aren’t preparing for it? The conservatives *brought it on!” Don’t forget one key purposes of the Iraq invasion for the neocons was to build a stable base for oil in the Mideast. Gee, look how well that worked. You have a better solution? Because I don’t see one in your post. Unless you have a matter-antimatter drive in your pocket. (Dilithium crystals just channeled the power.)

Just a note on refineries, almost every one has been “upgraded” because the tax breaks didn’t favor building new ones. Production capacity has never declined.

Like baslim, I remember smog alert days, when sensitive people were advised against breating outside no one should do heavy lifting or exercise. Clean air & water are good things.

All this fun argument, & my first thought was; “I have gas…”, too, I like beans.

Americans deserve to see the Feds acknowledge that we have a RIGHT to American crude oil and natural gas!

as a columnist wrote today “gas prices..nearing $4 a gallon….yet the Obama administration once again seems to see no crisis. It has curtailed new leases for offshore oil exploration for 7 years and exempted thousands of acres in the West FROM new drilling. It will not reconsider opening up small areas of Alaska with known large reserves…” RealClearPolitics.com and “After Obama, the Deluge” by Victor Davis Hanson

^ wow, talk about an entitlement frame of mind.

we have a RIGHT to plunder the land, cause all kinds of pollution, and hand huge, non-taxed profits to big oil.

we have a RIGHT to protect our air and water, imho, even more than a few select people have a RIGHT to make obscene profits off of it.

disgusted, we will NEVER be back to the days of really cheap oil. If we drilled the ANWR, the oil would last us six months.

baslim, one of the things I had in mind was nuclear plants for electric cars, but didn’t say it. I haven’t read that book yet (it did catch my eye), but from what I know nuclear waste is not trivial, especially if you include low-level waste (e.g., “infected” clothing, tools, etc.). Personally, I’d like to go for an all-out assault on fusion - either solve the problem or prove once and for all that it’s not possible for us.
