Actually (and I did double check before posting) it’s to apply oil to a small area as a symbolic gesture. It doesn’t mean somebody empties a vat of oil over you.

I’ve read a couple of Bart Ehrman’s books on the historical background of the New Testament. He’s a former believer who eventually decided he had to go with the evidence.

I wonder if Prof. Bart Ehrman is aware of this strip…

Apparently he’s confusing it with “Criscos”

For the best explanation (and it is, indeed, a “novel” one :)) of the “missing years, read Christopher Moore’s Lamb: The Gospel According To Christ’s Childhood Pal Biff.

Little surprised Zach, who I regard as one of the most erudite cartoonists around, misspelled “anointed”. And as long as I’m nitpicking, “anointing” someone is not “covering” them with oil, just putting a dab on their head or forehead.

Jebus fled to the far east to learn from Chinese philosophers, so he could preach the parables he was taught to the Israeli’s. Cannabis oil was used in the anointing oil. The bible is Jewish mythology. Yeah, I read it cover to cover.

There are multiple novels that explore Jesus’s missing years. I recommend “The Breath of God” by Jeffrey Small.

I’ve often thought that communion wafers could use a little oil.
