We had a dog that would do that, she would attack her tail like it was someone else, then shriek when she bit it. She would drop her tail, look all around for whomever attacked her, then go back to biting her tail, rinse, repeat….probably 3-4 times every night. I watched her do this for 16 years…bless her little soul. We had other dogs that would watch her, confused by what they saw, but Leia would never assume one of them did it, she was always looking for the mystery dog or cat that bit her.

I had a cat whose tail was a little longer than normal. She would lay on the back of a chair and her tail would wag a bit ;and she would attack it and fall off the chair. Hilarious!!!!
