Robert Norman Ross (October 29, 1942 – July 4, 1995) was an American painter, art instructor, and television host. He was the creator and host of The Joy of Painting, an instructional television program that aired from 1983 to 1994 on PBS in the United States, and also aired in Canada, Latin America, and Europe.

I thin the whole point of Bob Ross was that the art was for making, not for putting on someone’s screen.

Not Currier and Ives?

I hope they are not the ‘clown paintings’ type.

I’d go for any sort of painting which can evoke an emotional response from old master to modern and in-between.

One of my backgrounds is a shot of the Grand Canyon. It’s stretched about 2:1 vertically, but it’s hard to tell.

At least it’s not Kinkaide.

You know, that’s really a cool idea with the TV showing paintings. I think I would pick the works of Norman Rockwell myself to show on mine…. ;-)

You can still catch reruns, though they’re now called “The Best of the Joy of Painting.”

He got me started doing it. I did about 21 versions of the mountain lake before I got it right (meaning one I would show in public.)

A final comment on the subject. If the painting is in a museum or similar, then the painting is not porn, but art.

If you don’t like the old masters or mainstream art, how about trying something a little different? Fantasy art is my favorite, but steampunk is really fun, and comics are great. You can get stills from animated movies, photographs from around the world – there are no end to the possibilities!

I have a desktop wallpaper program that cycles through all the pictures I have saved. Anytime I check my desktop I get a visual treat.

Btw, he hated his “signature” hair style, but didn’t change it because it made him more recognizable… silly, vane man. :)
