When I they were little, there was a bet on how long it took grandpa to get on the floor with his grandchildren after walking in the door. We’d play the silliest games and I let the girls make up the rules. Some of the most fun times of my life.
Yesterday the grandkids (ages 10-13) and I went to the park with six bats and three balls. We quickly produced a game with a pitcher, a batter or two, and somebody who would be a catcher or batter if the other batters somehow ended up on base. More than once at least three of us, one with the ball, were running for the next base while the other either watched in bemused wonder at what would happen, or was running to home. It was too disorganized to even qualify as Calvinball, so I dubbed it giggly ball.
Heh, what Calvin says in the second panel reminds me of “Polly-Wolly-Doodle all the day!” I also picture Calvin and Hobbes singing the “I’m Very Sorry Song” in the style of this song from a PC game from my childhood… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hO6Twd1SPQ
I was thinking about Calvinball yesterday. Who knew that would the next strip to come up? Perhaps these strips resonate for those of us who lived during the time when as kids we made our own fun.
@"Ermine NotYours" In referring to a crazy game from Mad Magazine, surely you meant “43-man Squamish”?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Koch#43-Man_Squamishhttps://www.madcoversite.com/quiz_olympics.html
Reminds me of when I was working stadium court at the Miami Open (tennis). Someone out of view of the scoreboard approached a volunteer to ask the score. She looked up at the score and replied, 63 to 24. Obviously, not a tennis player :)

Are Hobbes’ verses supposed to be sung after Calvin’s or at the same time?
GreasyOldTam over 4 years ago
One of my all time favorites. Even if I can’t figure out how, if the game is never played the same way twice, do they know the words to the song?
I’ve always assumed that the dots between Calvin and Hobb’s first two lines imply they are sung together.

Mr. Watterson’s hand must’ve gotten VERY tired after all this.

“You can’t play it the same way twice”…which makes it fun to play!

Most sports* are incredibly boring to play and even more boring to watch, but Calvinball looks like fun!
(*Except for women’s diving, women’s ice-skating, and women’s beach volleyball.)

The Bonus Box having a school book would spoil all of this.

Calvin Ball may become an Olympic sport, one day.

This sounds similar to Cricket.

I love the last panel in the second row so much. Hobbes’s completely serious face is what sells it.

I remember playing some game where we would yell, “Ollie Ollie in come free!”…Whatever that meant?

I remember every word of this. Every single word for almost thirty years. What a tremendous comic strip. Glorious, beautiful nonsense.

Q to 12 eh? Tight game. Might even go to extra laps.

They should make Calvinball an Olympic sport. Of course Calvin and Hobbs would very easily win!

I think everyone should play Calvin Ball every now and then especially as a child . We did only we didn’t always use a ball.

Great song! I’d love to get the music for our band. Though guess it’s done a capella.

There was a made up game in an episode of M*A*S*H called “Cranko”. It had the same rules.

The energy of Calvin amazing.

I wonder if this strip was inspired by an episode of MASH when Hawkeye and BJ played a game called “Double Crank-o.”

And years after Calvin and Hobbes went to that great comic strip in the sky, Calvinball is still used by writers to make a point.

One of the few times Watterson let Calvin “Break the Wall”. In the last panel Calvin talks directly to us.

I’ve seen kids spend hours coming up with rules for a game and then never play the game. I think the challenge was the rules making.
