Never had a helmet while I rode a pedal bike, but I did wear long pants, because I could wind up laying it down in gravel. Once I got a Yamaha 125 Dirt Bike I got a helmet and a leather jacket. And I’d NEVER get on a paved road with cars without full gear.
My dumbass of soon to be ex-wife got into a pissing contest with me recently. Said that making our children wear a helmet while on scooters, bikes, etc.., “it’s a judgement call.” Direct quote. And the woman works in a trauma center.
I’ve seen my fair share of brains outside of the head over the years. I’d prefer to never see it again.
Helmets for cyclists are definately a good thing. Having said that, any kid that wore one when I was a kid is the 60’s would have been laughed off the road.

Glad I was wearing one when I hit a pot hole on my bicycle, I can still feel my head hitting the pavement, dented the helmet, but not my head!
