It’s amazing to me how many of todays “issues” are identical to those from 50 years ago. I bet, if a poll were taken, very few people now would realise that cholesterol was a concern that long ago.

Well, it wasn’t as general a concern as it is today. And it was not so long before that this comic that doctors were still recommending smoking.

In 1960 there was very little that could be done about hyperlipidemia other than lifestyle changes, which as everyone knows are very hard to make stick and sometimes aren’t even all that effective. There were a few lipid-lowering drugs available at the time but they were largely poorly tolerated. The first truly effective and safe lipid-lowering drugs, the statin family, were discovered in the late 1970s and didn’t come into wide use until the late 1980s.
