In modern warfare, the objective is to sink the enemy’s ships. In the days of sailing ships the objective was to disable them with the intention of boarding them and possibly taking them over. Cannon shots were aimed not at the hull, but at the masts. Hit one of them and it will shake (or shiver). Etymology lesson concluded.

Did Popeye say “shiver me timbers?” I don’t remember him saying that in the shorts that sometimes play on the old-fashioned tv at my work. Not that I stand there & watch the tv; I’ve just caught snatches. A lot of the dialogue is a little hard to follow, too, in Popeye & his rival’s deep, growly, accented voices… Not Olive’s screaming, though. When the tv is on to Popeye, I can hear Olive screaming every couple minutes the entire hour I’m on my upstairs shift.
