Amy came to Tackleford when she was 17, to work as receptionist at City Limit, a local events magazine edited by her father, Len Pickering. Shelley Winters and Tim Jones, who have known Ryan since they were all at Griswalds together, also worked at City Limit, and Amy met Ryan through them.
Five years ago would be roughly the end of Scary-Go-Round, when in the familiar timeline, Shelley convinced Ryan and Amy to stop dancing around each other and get together.
Of course, the sexy maths has some variables unknown to the girls, as Melanie and Ryan have form in all timelines.
In the original history, they had a thing after the ladies who currently own Amy’s shop set fire to said shop in the belief that it was a shop less of the antiques and more of the knocking variety and Ryan saved Melanie’s life. The relationship failed to stand the test of time, and more importantly the test of Melanie’s dad getting hurt after going inadvisably Batman on the smuggler gang Ryan was infiltrating for justice reasons.
To her credit, Amy is pretty apologetic about it. You get the impression she at least still feels like Ryan deserves better, she’s just lost hope of him ever stepping up to get it.
In a Simpson’s episode where Homer goes back in time and accidentally steps on a butterfly and changes the future, he tries many times to go back and fix the mistake.
But, in the end, he finally goes back and starts killing everything he can in a maniacal fury.

Look on the bright side, girls. Maybe in this new time line it’s Melanie who saves Mr. Beckwith. And you are the ones who brought it about!

A very rude awakening for ours three young heroes. There’s no predestination in this world.

I think we are approaching a similar point here.
