Originally, the previous page, with the girls watching the Beetles video, was the last page of “Forked Road”. This one is a new one added for the published version. Tomorrow’s page, which is the new end of the case, was in the original webcomic version, but it was originally posted between the last Amy, Ryan, and Comrade Bat flashback page and the first one with the boys in the bowling alley.
These pages are a flashback, interleaved with specific strips at the beginning of the Scary Go Round story “Chilton Takes Charge”, which was actually posted (January 2008) roughly six years before the end of “Forked Road” (December 2013). However that just makes the timeline more confusing, because there was a three-year timeskip between the end of Scary Go Round and the beginning of Bad Machinery, where Giant Days and Destroy History fit in. The timeline of Bad Machinery is pretty well established by the progression of school terms, and going six years back should put us in the middle of the timeskip.
“Chilton Takes Charge” started with Ryan (and Comrade Bat) unemployed and couch-surfing, and Amy at loose ends, until the meeting we see here. Amy took Ryan in, and Ryan inspired her to open Bric-A-Brac — which was then burned down due to the machinations of her rivals across the street, the old ladies who were running it in the alternate timeline. Ryan saved Melanie from the fire, and through some manipulations I’m still not entirely clear on, Amy ended up in possession of the old ladies’ shop, which is the current Bric-A-Brac. Ryan dated Melanie for a bit after that, and then moved on to Lottie’s sister Sarah. He didn’t get together with Amy until after Sarah left for university at the end of SGR.
But that storyline set both of them on the track to being successful as individuals and as a couple, and this chance meeting not happening, say because the Station pub was destroyed in a train wreck in 1960, derails the entire end of SGR.

I think having a bat in his pocket is the most normal thing for him right now.
