My wife once had her car broken into (in her condo’s garage) but nothing much taken; when she tried to start it, though, she discovered that the battery had been stolen…
I had a Datsun where you could insert the key part way and turn to ON. You couldn’t start the car OR remove the key. I had to dismantle the lock to remove the key.
Battery Stolen. I once heard a batteries were being stolen. Thieves came back later, stole the new one, but replaced it with the old one, so it wouldn’t be noticed.
Last year I had a brand new car. I was returning to the parking lot, did the unlock click thing from a distance, opened the back door to put my rollerbag in. I noticed that the interior looked different. My own car, three cars down, was still locked, so the car I entered had been left unlocked.

I once unlocked the car door, put the key in the ignition, and heard a honking. I looked around and realized this car is too clean to be mine.

That happened to me once with my old saturn, I open the car, and tried to start it and then realized I was in a saturn parked next to my saturn.

Good thing Betty stayed to watch them start the car. My wife always does that too…
