What a coincidence! Just yesterday we had a female Hairy Woodpecker on the feeder here in northernmost Maine. I even got out my Peterson’s and binoculars to confirm it wasn’t a Downy. The beak was definitely longer. Charles knows what he’s talking about.

I thought that was how Minnie was finally hired at Disney to be Mickey’s girlfriend?

THIS is the bird we call ‘Florida chickadee’ (yes, it is related to the Black-capped chickadee) . . . I’m looking at quite a few right now at the front feeding area. It’s British for ‘small bird’, BTW . . .

Woodpeckers have been visiting my feeders for years, and yet I still haven’t mastered the distinction between Hairy and Downy. But whichever, they’re handsome little ’peckers, nonetheless.

Charles has more “class” in his pinky than parvenu Barney has in his whole thumb.

Lucretia should reward his circumspection with some little … what do the Brits call it? Titbit!

If you ask me, “hairy woodpecker” sounds just as naughty as “titmouse.”
