I’m one of 3 contingent workers at my lab. When we get an overflow of samples to analyze, we come in off-hours and on the weekend to do our work. On some Mondays, during especially busy times, I bet it looks like elves have been in, judging by the crammed outbox.
I had to do it the old-fashioned way: work 60-80 hours/week to keep my head above the trash heap while getting paid for 40 because I was an “exempt employee”. The federal definition of “exempt” seriously needs to be updated for inflation.

We call ‘em File Fairies: those mystical beings who do all of our work while customers think we take school breaks and summers off.
