I couldn’t get past that hiked-up right side of her dress. Looked to me like she was lifting the stub of a leg so naturally I thought this might be a painting Hedda Hopper.

ba da boom. that’s it. nothing more to it. Hedda HOPPER. Too bad I finally saw her right foot on the ground. That damn Elmore…

Griselda from The Clerk’s Tale by Chaucer

    http://www.wikigallery.org/wiki/painting_213566/Alfred-Elmore/Griselda-from-the-Clerks-Tale-by-Chaucer

has sparse info about this roughly jumbo envelope size painting; but, it is where Mr. Melcher found it, and I couldn’t find an un-watermarked image online to upload to WC.

all have info, or links that point to more info, about this artist (again, askart.com can be read in full for free on Firdays), perhaps in addition to what’s pointed to by the title URL. So far, 2 works by him have been used here.

    https://www.gocomics.com/that-is-priceless/2020/04/08?comments=visible

has the prior (my comment there used the same artist info URLs).

Again, a larger strip image is shown by (⌘- or Ctrl-) clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s MASTERPIECE #2429 (April 15, 2020) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment.

I don’t have editing privileges there, like I do at WC. If I did, I would add it depicts the scene from around line 290 of the tale:

    http://sites.fas.harvard.edu/~chaucer/teachslf/clkt-par.htm

based on the title Christie’s used

    http://www.artnet.com/artists/alfred-w-elmore/griselde-and-as-she-wolde-over-the-threswold-gon-qFtjx4nEtboyBAKehAfM5A2

    to auction it

    https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/elmore-alfred-w-1815-1881-534-c-xvq0oukpmp

November 13, 1991 (Christie’s doesn’t generally show pre-2000 auction results online, or I would have pointed to that instead).
