Calvin’s Dad is sharper than he lets on! It seems like a lot of characters have this ability to beat Calvin at his own game sometimes: Wormwood, both his parents, Susie, and Rosalyn (literally)!
My dad would just say No. “Allowance? I feed and clothe you, don’t I? You put your feet under my table three times a day.” That “feet under my table” line was his answer to everything.
Ironically, there are now ways people can make money doing more disgusting things than what Calvin is proposing, or even what the father said would be worth a dollar. (Smart man to use it to get Calvin to do a chore.) Should we consider our age an improvement?

My mom paid my son $1 for every sandspur plant he brought her! Worked, too, as we have had no sandspurs in 30 years.

Pretty inconsistent characterization..Calvin is scared of a plate of funny looking food, but would have no problem eating a bug.

And for $100, you’d have to agree to run away. I’ll even make you sandwiches for the journey.
