Hobbes, how can you belong to GROSS when you’re always talking about smooching Susie? Doesn’t that go against your grain? Or, are you a “mole,” working undercover to undermine GROSS?
Interesting strip today, with Calvin and Hobbes representing two opposite personality types. Calvin wants adherence to his defined protocol, and Hobbes wants the freedom of spontaneity.
Similarly, on this site, fran650 and I are opposite personality types. Yesterday, fran650 asked me to conform to her defined protocol for my postings, which requires that I use only short sentences and only a few of them. But I am resisting because I need room for flexibility, creativity, and spontaneity.
Weird. It’s almost as though Hobbes and I think alike. :>)
We enjoy Hobbes (the tiger) not because he’s real, but because he’s a figment of Calvin’s imagination, and we get to see it. He’s the moralist that Calvin knows is there, and generally his common sense and often ironical statements are Calvin’s own, but by externalizing them it makes it easier for him to make bad decisions. It sure is fun seeing what his dilemmas are, though. Brings up memories …
Hobbes I will give you support as you gave me. Just be yourself on your comments.
I had an uncle my mom’s brother would have been like Calvin in one way, didn’t really like children. He did marry they had one daughter and he was men to her, but as health failed him depended on her until his death. His wife died decades ago of coronary heart disease not eating right and lack of exercise.
LeslieAnne is a member of the club. LeslieAnne is the third person (and speaks in the third person for fun).
“Now I shout it from the highest hills,
…and my secret love’s no secret anymore.”
Some girls are slimy (according to Calvin), and some girls are slimmy.
A democracy is always like this. Some want to understand the financials and some want to divert attention away from that. Because there’s something fishy about the financials. Somehow or other we go forward.
I think it’s more that Hobbes wants to follow Roget’s Rules of Disorder.

Welcome back, Mr. Hobbes, you’ve been missed,
Your “vacations” should cease and desist,
Cause we like what you say
And it brightens our day
Thinking maybe you really exist!
Except it wasn’t really a “vacation” but rather was a Lenten asceticism.
This cartoon gave me a good, and needed, laugh. Calvin has an astonishing number of personalities in him. A six year old calling his stuffed tiger an anarchist is both brilliant and beyond the pale all at the same time….
Rules are just begging to be broken by human(tiger) desires. I would vote anarchist in the upcoming election if they had a rep here. By definition anarchists don’t have a party. They are true idealists about what humans are capable of. They get such a bad rap these days, but in Spain they almost defeated Franco and his dictatorship. The Catholic clergy supported Franco. Anarchists are antireligious.

“Financial Report” … “proper protocol” … “agenda” … “anarchist” … I love this 6-year-old’s vocabulary! Already so insightful about the way things ought to be done — and that’s by the rules. I definitely see a life in politics as far as his future’s concerned!
Just been reading the postings for the last day or so and all i can say is WOW, when did the funny’s get so nasty? There seems to be an unpleasant undercurrent amongst some of the posters who appear to have forgotten the old adage “If you’ve nothing nice to say, shut the heck up” (or something along those lines). Everyone has the right to enjoy these strips, and comment on them, but can’t we all just TRY to get along, rather than snipe, backbite and bicker? How about we all join together to form GROSP (Get Rid Of Sour Posters) and be a bit nicer to each other. Love the strip as ever, and nice to see you back Hobbes.
@HOBBES: I just found out you came back! I think your postings are wonderful, and especially KIND, not like some of the ones I read when I went back to yesterday’s comments. Don’t pay any attention to the nay sayers. 99.9% of us love you.
Welcome back Hobbes, it’s good to have you back :) It’s such a shame not all of the posters on this site are as mellow as could be wished for. I can’t admit to enjoying all your postings, it varies with my mood and your content ;)
My solution to this occasional difference in our personalities is similar to what one of the grumpy souls from yesterday said. I simply retune the station with the use of my trusty middle mouse wheel and scroll down a little.
I’m a long time reader and lover of C&H. To me they are both wonderful, yet honery each in their own way. How can anyone not love them both.
I truly enjoy reading the postings of Hobbes. Missed the posts very much in his absence. I sure wish I those wrting skills.
If you’re still in the building: We’re seeing here a fascinating interplay between an ENFP child and his INFJ subconscious as alter ego, and no strip I can recall shows it better than this one.
In terms of archetypes (according to John Beebe’s model), Calvin’s Extraverted Thinking is his Innocent Child, and that’s what we’re seeing here. Normally he doesn’t insist on order, protocol and checklists, but when he comes down to this level he does.
In Hobbes (the Tiger) the same cognitive process is his Mischievous Child, which explains the “anarchistic” way in which he employs the process.
Since ENFPs and INFJs are Contrasting personalities, it’s not surprising that these two have such fundamental, frequent and mirror-image conflicts. “Can you say compromise?”
For today’s strip, I was thinking more in terms of “concrete-sequential” vs. “abstract-random” personality types – from a 4-part model that also includes the “concrete-random” and “abstract-sequential” combinations. Of course, “concrete-sequential” doesn’t exactly describe Calvin in a lot of other situations, so he is exhibiting an unusual behavior today.
By the way, what is your guess regarding Hobbes-the-Commenter’s Myers-Briggs personality type? I’m thinking it would be difficult to guess, just based on a forum like this. At least with the comic strip, you also get to see Calvin and Hobbes in action, rather than just reading their words.
My father ( 85 ) has been a life long member. Don’t know how he ever had kids.
Perhaps…unwillingly? All three of mine were unwillingly. After they were born, I became the unwilling provider of the cash…lots and lots of it. TG they are all adults now, with kids of their own, and NOW the unwilling providers of cash…lots and lots of it! (I hope my kids get the subtle hint! He-he!)
Enough with the psycho-babble, already! How about Calvin might just be al onely little boy, who doesn’t have any friends 9other than possibly Susie) and has created a persona for his stuffed tiger toy, Hobbes? Calvin’s conversations are always with himself (when talking to Hobbes), and he is learning his “values” (Interpersonal interaction) from that. I think yu will find most only children do this frequently when in strange or uncomfortable situations when they are 6 or 7 years old.
